This Tuna Sushi Recipe is an easy and healthy dish that is perfect for the lunch box. We used cooked tuna to make it a kid friendly recipe. The thought of making homemade tuna sushi seems to intimidate a lot of us (myself included). But after my first homemade sushi attempt, I realized that it’s really not that difficult. Just follow the step-by-step instructions (with photos) of this easy homemade sushi. It will help to purchase a bamboo mat. Although not an absolute necessity, it just makes rolling easier, because it helps make a tight sushi roll.
* Tip for busy moms: I don’t always use sushi rice. Most of the time, I use whatever leftover rice I have from a previous meal.
Tuna Sushi Recipe Method
Mix in the vinegar to the cooked rice. Set aside.
Mix the canned tuna and Japanese mayonnaise together. Season with salt. Set aside.
Lay the Nori (Japanese seaweed) on top of a bamboo mat, shiny side down.
Spread some rice on the bottom part of the nori, covering approximately ¼ of the nori. (Tip: Dip your fingers in a small bowl of water before handling the rice).
Put some tuna on top of the rice. Add carrots or other vegetables (optional).
Using the bamboo sushi mat, slowly roll the nori, starting from the bottom going up. Just before rolling it all the way to the top, dip your finger in water and run it on the very top of the nori. The water will help the nori stick together.
